“Tackling Is Desperation, Not Development!”

Now before all of you get all worked up you need to take a look at the source of the quote…It didn’t come from me, but I agree with it wholeheartedly….

The other day I read an interesting quote from Xavi Hernandez of FC Barcelona and the Spanish National Team…

Xavi was asked what he thought about the English system and how they teach tackling as a developmental block….

Xavi reaction was classic…”Tackling is desperation, not development…it is a last resort…teach kids to be smarter and they won’t need to tackle…”

Here in America we have universally adopted the English philosophy of play due to the heavy influence of Englishmen teaching the sport in the states…

Not saying the English don’t have a good developmental system because the Golden Group that came out of Manchester United with Beckam, Scholes, Giggs and company was one of the best ever…

But what I am saying is that as the game evolves and we start to realize that it is an inherently intelligent game, the great soccer nations, like Spain and Brazil, have moved away from the physical side of the game and become increasingly focused on the creative side of the game…

The creative side of the game is the philosophy and system I have chosen to move forward with as well with great success for my players…

Let me know your thoughts…what youth system do you like or follow?
