Are You Ever Going to Teach These Kids Technique?

So just this week I had a coach observing my U9 Girls training session…

I opened the session like I do most of the time with a coordination exercise…some basic running and jumping with changes of direction…

From there I broke them off into small groups to work on a possession support drill with the combination play being the objective at hand…

When they finished that exercise I had them take a break for some water…

Then, out of nowhere the coach immediately asked me, “Are you ever going to teach them technique”?

With my eyes rolling in the back of my head I took a deep breath before I answered…

But instead of answering, I played dumb and asked him, “What do you mean by technique”?

Of course I knew where he was going with this but I gave him a chance to put his foot in his mouth…

He responds by saying, “You know, teaching them how to dribble, having them dribble through cones and things so they can get better on the ball!”

Instead of answering his question, I asked him another question.  “So, when these 9 year olds move around the field, pass the ball, receive the ball properly, immediately analyze the situation and play a teammate, move into open space to receive it back one time (combination play), you don’t consider that technique?”

I then proceeded to break the game down to him…the level of intelligence he was witnessing right there in front of him is only achieved by 1% of youth in America…I went on to tell him that you will never be able to teach kids to play the intelligent game if you have them dribbling around cones and doing analytical training…

What we have to understand in this country is that soccer is a simple game…it really is…90% of the time you are off the ball…when you are on the ball, 90% of your passes are with the inside of the foot and 90% of your traps are with the inside of the foot…so doesn’t it make sense that you would spend most of your time having the kids perfect what they will be doing 90% of the time?

But there is no need for me to keep beating a dead horse here folks…I have circled back time and time around this same topic…

I will be posting some video shortly of my girls playing…it will give you a chance to see real possession soccer at 9 years old…Then you can tell me if they have good technique or not…
