Uncovering a Developmental Saboteur in Youth Soccer

All I can say is Amen to Christian Lavers…He is the President of the ECNL, Exec VP of US Club Soccer a Director of a Youth Club and a Women’s professional coach…

It’s about time someone a bit higher on the US Soccer food chain had the balls to say what I have been preaching forever…

This crap youth soccer that 99% of the coaches are teaching is a joke…with their concentration on recruiting talented and athletic youngsters and playing win at all costs kickball…

Please read the article below…I know I have taken shot after shot from my parents as well as other parents and coaches on my styles and philosophies…

I’ve had parents on my team question why I’m not concerned with winning league at U9…why do I play 8 months of developmental soccer and only 2 months a year of competitive type tournaments…why do I play all players close to half a game in the developmental cycle…why do I allow my teams to lose games by playing out the back when we can just kick forward and not take the chance of making mistakes…that’s just from parents…

How about other soccer coaches…the possession style you are teaching kids is taking away from their individual creativity…your team might be on top now but you will be doomed in another year or two playing that style…you are creating robots…oh, and this one takes the cake….you are too systematic for 9 and 10 year olds…

My kids don’t just play soccer, they study it from the age of 8…they learn concepts within the scope of the game…they understand why they are doing something…they understand what they are doing…they understand when to execute it and in what situation…it’s called soccer intelligence…those that think soccer is just a sport are sadly mistaken and failing their youth…soccer is a chess match which takes a very high level of intelligence to play at the highest levels…you can’t compensate for lack of intelligence with athleticism….

I will post a link of the article below…let me know what you think….Do you know any coaches like the ones described in the article? I know quite a few who think they are living it up and doing great things for kids, when in turn, they are doing youth careers irreparable harm…Coach Randle
