Putting it all in perspective

So yesterday my U9 girls had their 14 game win streak snapped…

That was a series of 4 tournaments…a second place, 2 first places, and a quarter-final loss…

Now, as you know, I don’t even value the wins or even the competitions…

My point here is to demonstrate that my philosophy of never sacrificing development over winning can still produce amazing results…

When you do it “the right way”, winning just happens…

So to recap the game, my girls lost because they are products of my system…the game fell apart in the first half when my center back played a ball back to the goalie who received it beautifully, but froze and played it right back to the striker who dribbled it in…

The girls started crying and never did recover from that…It’s funny, the girls and their parents put all the pressure on themselves to win…it isn’t me…I told them to brush it off…it was beautiful soccer…it was the way it was supposed to be played…but not even my reassurances could keep them from breaking down during and after the game…

So I talked to them…I had to let them know that losing is a part of growing as an athlete and individual…you can’t win them all…I told them that they played the game the right way and that things don’t always end fairly…I reminded them about losing the semi-finals in indoor to a team that had no business playing with us…and how they would grow from that and be better people and players…

I told them just how proud of them I was…and it was the TRUTH!…They are an amazing group of girls that just love this game to the fullest…

So to put it all in perspective…we are going to continue to do what we do…we won’t be defined by wins and trophies…we will be defined by the beautiful and intelligent soccer we play…no other U9 team plays possession soccer like we do and that is the ultimate reward in itself…

Thanks again for listening…we will talk again soon…please leave your comments below….
